Next Session: TBD (November 2026).

1. Session Summary
The session began with the party returning from the ritual site to the village of Oat Marsh. Weasley carried the severed villager heads that had been growing on the Death’s Head Tree, presenting them to Viviana and the gathered villagers. Viviana clarified that while the High Harvest festival usually relies on voluntary sacrifices to ward off winter famine, they never intended for the villagers to be murdered by the corrupted druid Burla. After resting in the village and restoring their strength, the party departed the following morning through the mists.
Emerging from the mists, the party fell into a cold subterranean stream, climbed a wooden ladder onto a perch, and entered a dark, ruined subterranean fortress. In the fortress’s tavern hall, they encountered Yandy, a Vampire Familiar, alongside two Bandit Captains, four Tuffs, and two kidnapped villagers. Jon Deadward (“JD”) controlled the initial brawl by casting Tasha’s Hideous Laughter on two bandits, while Lucien Morvath cast Hold Person to paralyze Yandy. Lucien then delivered a point-blank, electrified blast that incinerated Yandy against the wall.
Moving deeper into the fortress, the party explored a torture chamber. Creme commanded Rotney to tear off a cage door, freeing a trapped villager who rewarded them with health potions. Lucien then used Disguise Self to assume Yandy’s form. In the Hall of Crypts, Lucien channeled lore from his patron Azalin Rex via his Symbiote Eye to identify shock traps and disabling command phrases on the sarcophagi. With the traps disarmed, Creme and Rotney pried open the crypts and rescued several more trapped villagers.
In the Statue Chamber, four hypnotized villagers stood atop humming pedestals. Rotney stepped into the center, taking psychic damage and gaining the glowing Mark of Azalin on his forehead. A Vampire Mind Flayer emerged, revealing he was using the statues’ energy to convert the captives into new vampires. Lucien initially duped the creature with a dirty 30 Deception check while disguised as Yandy, but when JD attempted to force the Mind Flayer onto a rack using Suggestion, the creature resisted and battle began. Lucien blinded the Mind Flayer and shoved it into JD’s Cloud of Daggers, while Weasley landed heavy spells. Rotney delivered the final blow by shoving the Mind Flayer into a torture mincing mechanism, grinding him into a pink mist. Upon its death, the Second Shadow Raven rose, cawed, and dissolved into nothingness.
After the battle, Lucien explored the upper landing and discovered a skeleton in a crib with a letter from Mary Ven. The letter described how her memories had been stolen, mentioned her lost daughter Emma, and revealed an iron spike marked with an open eye hidden beneath plaster that unsealed the hidden chamber. Rotney ripped the spike from the mortar, and when Lucien placed it on the skeleton while naming “Emma”, the Keeper’s Silver Eye brooch materialized. Creme also recovered the Dreamkeeper Stone from a bedroom.

7. Plot Threads / Quest Hooks
- Resolved: The Vampire Familiar Yandy and the Vampire Mind Flayer have been slain; all captive villagers were rescued; the Second Shadow Raven was destroyed.
- Active: Tracking down the remaining two Shadow Ravens across the Dread Domains.
- Unanswered Mysteries: What is Enza’s ultimate endgame and why is she guiding the party to eliminate the ravens? What long-term effects will the Mark of Azalin have on Rotney?
8. Lore Revealed
- High Harvest Rituals in Tepest: Viviana clarified that harvest sacrifices were historically voluntary acts of devotion to ward off winter famine, not predatory murders.
- Vampire Mind Flayers: Monstrous amalgams capable of extracting life force and psychic energy from captives to convert them into new vampire thralls.
- Mark of Azalin: A magical mark depicting a desiccated skull associated with the Lich King Azalin Rex of Darkon, granting heightened initiative at the cost of physical resilience (disadvantage on Con saves).
9. Funny or Memorable Quotes
- “Where’s the barkeep?” (Creme walking into a room of hostile bandits)
- “Don’t thank us, thank Lolth.” (Weasley handing crude spider drawings to rescued captives)
- “You’ve got something on your shirt…” [flicks nose, casts Tasha’s Hideous Laughter] (Jon Deadward)
- “I’m the reverse Tooth Fairy… I’m looking for vampire teeth!” (Creme searching the Mind Flayer’s remains)
10. Rules or Table Issues
- Spiritual Weapon (2024 Rules): Reconfirmed that Spiritual Weapon now requires Concentration in the 2024 Player’s Handbook.
- Sacred Flame Scaling: Corrected a character sheet misprint — Sacred Flame deals 1d8 damage at Level 4 (scaling to 2d8 at Level 5).
- Mark of Azalin Mechanics: Established that the desiccated skull mark provides advantage on initiative rolls but disadvantage on Constitution saving throws.
- Attunement Rules: Noted that short rests are required to attune to new magic items like the Keeper’s Silver Eye.
11. DM Notes / Future Foreshadowing
- Rotney’s Mark: Rotney bearing the Mark of Azalin Rex provides a direct connection to Lucien’s patron in Darkon and can be leveraged in future domain transitions.
- Enza’s True Agenda: As two of the four Shadow Ravens are now destroyed, Enza’s ultimate purpose and potential power grab should be hinted at as the party grows closer to her true goal.
- Rescued Villagers’ Dissemination: The rescued captives returning home with Weasley’s Lolth pamphlets creates a humorous recurring continuity hook for future visits to Tepest.
12. Next Session Setup
The party has fully cleared the subterranean castle, rescued all the captive villagers, and destroyed the second Shadow Raven. Armed with 200 GP, the Dreamkeeper Stone, and the Keeper’s Silver Eye, the group stands ready at the edge of the castle halls. The DM should prepare for the return of the mists and the transition into the domain containing the Third Shadow Raven.
